Contrasts
Comparison of Contrast to find Theme:
Theme: God/light always is. Defined Hope (could be worded better)
God put light both in day and in night to separate the darkness from light. Therefore, Darkness cannot be where light is, but light can be where darkness is. Thus, Satan is not the opposite of God, and cannot be everywhere at once. But God is and can. This concept of thought is also found in (v.1-2). “Darkness over the surface of the earth.” here we see that darkness was in the beginning of creation. But in the next line it says, “and, the Spirit of God” etc. Again, we see a continuum of thought. Thus, God opens the passage with a statement of Power and establishes His authority over evil. (v.3) brings light into subject again. Almost seems redundant.
In (v. 1-2) we see the writer introducing the concept mentioned above concerning the establishment of light (where its reign can be etc.). But in (v.3), he then establishes in summary of what light is, or influence in contrast to darkness. So, we have basic contrast of creation. But we also have a contrast demonstrated concerning authority and character.
Repeated Phrases:
Who?
What?
How does His creation bring Him glory?
All His creation reflects His image. But mankind is ‘in’ His image. (v.27) “So God created mankind in His own image.” It is impossible for any painter not to paint a picture without reflecting His personality and character in some way. It is the same with God.
We see this also through the fact that He separates light from darkness. God is completely good. He created in goodness, in His light. Therefore, His creation is a reflection of that Light. Revealing to us who He is, and who we are as His children. By deigning His light, one could controversially make the case in a since that we no longer reflect that light. As the created we do, but not on a deeper level. Darkness cannot dwell where light is. Therefore, if we do not accept the light of GOD, (just a random thought that I want to study) maybe one could say that we are no longer in His image? Because at the time that the chap. Was written, all creation was in perfect harmony with the Presence of God.
How can these key phrases refute evolution? How important is the Sabbath to God?
In the repeated phrase, “According to their kinds” there is no room for evolution. All creatures we have come from an original ‘kind’ in the garden. But even as two various ‘kinds’ are breed, to evolve a new ‘kind’. Cats do not birth dogs, and whales' birds. They are all according to their ‘seed’.
What does the word kind mean?
In Genesis 7: 3, two of each kind of land animal were brought onto the Ark in order to preserve their offspring. This is a common theme of usage of ‘Kind’ in Genesis. Therefore, we can assume that the definition of ‘kind’ is the basic of preproduction. If Animals could inter breed beyond kinds in order to preserve, there would be no reason for God to bring two of each kind. Dogs of various breeds can breed together, because they are the same kind-dog. But dogs, and cats cannot. Therefore, we cannot evolve from a whale to man or ape to man. Why would this be the case if one cannot breed? If we can evolve from one species to another species over a period of time, then we must also be able to breed between ‘kinds’. Because nature must be consistent with itself.
Lion and the tiger can breed but it cannot reproduce. They are both cats, but they are so distantly related that their offspring becomes infertile. Therefore, you can make the case that they are of different ‘kinds’. If you have two animals of even farther distance, they might can mate, but there would be no offspring.
Sabbath
It is important enough that He rested Himself.
Ez.20:12
“Also I gave them my Sabbaths as a sign between us, so they would know that I the Lord made them holy.”
Exodus 20:11
For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Ex. 31:13
Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy.
Etc.
Taking the Sabbath is an expression of Faith. It is Faith in action. It is saying that I recognize your control in my life. Sabbath can also be worded as “to cease”. Thus, one stops pursuing material goods, or ‘living according to the word’ for say, and spends the day focusing on God. It is saying that you trust in the Lord to provide while ceasing to focus on Him. -To live in the Presence of God. The separation of light from darkness-again this parallels the theme of the chapter.
